I have a hp dvd640i dvd burner. It has an installion disk with it. I tried using crossover to install it and it doesn't work. Crossover starts the program and I get an error message. I used crossover to install other windows based programs with no problems. Is there a way to get my burner active using a linux based driver?
Windows drivers generally do not work in Linux so crossover won't be helpful to you in this instance. If the burner is recognised in Linux, then all you need to do to burn dvds is to run an app such as k3b, gnomebaker or xcdroast.
I got sonic record to load and when I open it, I get the message that my dvd drive isn't enabled. Still pretty new to this program Linux open circulation edition 3.2 I believe

You might enable ide to scsi emulation on the cd drive. Requires ide-scsi to be compiled in the kernel and on the boot line hdc=ide-scsi. Change hdc to correct /dev for the cd. This is old way related to 2.4 kernels and should not be needed in the 2.6 kernels but can be used. Doubt it will make a difference but my only thought.
