Emprex DVD dual 16x Double Layer burner problems

I am having problems trying to burn a data DVD using K3b software on Mandriva. The box claims it can write at +16x , -16x or rewrite +8x or -4x.

I am using 8x -R DVD's and I have failed 3 times. I tried buring on auto, 4X, 8x and even 16x using K3b, but in everycase it has failed and given me this message write failed: Input/output error.

Is it failing because K3b cannot handle a dual layer DVD burner or must I use a different DVD disc? It makes no sense to me at all.

Here's what was said in the debug comments -

K3B can handle a dual layer burner. I have one and use it regularly. Can you do all of the following:
- mount and read a CD or DVD
- burn a CD
- watch a DVD movie via wine, caffiene, ogle or other player

If so, then it's probably the media you're using. What are you trying to burn?

Yes I can do all of the below listed:
- mount and read a CD or DVD
- burn a CD
- watch a DVD movie Kaffiene

I spoke to someone at the store I purchased and he said he uses Mandrake 10.2 K3b and can burn a DVD on auto using an 8X DVD. He uses the exact same Emprex that I am using, and he claims he has 2 machines using Emprex 16X dual layer and both run Linux.

All I am doing is burning a Data DVD, some music videos saved in mpeg and a lot of mp3 and .rar files.

OK go figure, all I did was use (switched to) a DVD+R 8x (versus a -R) and I set burn session on auto and this time the DVD data burned really fast with no problems, so go figure.

The only difference was I did not burn the mp3's (back-ups) along with the mpeg movie data files. The size was only a little over 1GB on this burn, whereas on the other burns, they were close to 3.5GB, so could that really be the difference of a make or break deal?

Emprex worked with Linux Mandriva LE 05.....
