difference between /dev/hda to /dev/sd0

hello there, i just want to ask what is the difference of having your IDE CD/DVD drive in /dev/sd0 rather than in /dev/hda? my friend and i have the same kernel version and distro (Ubuntu). the only difference is, my hard drive is detected in the file system of /dev/hda and his is in /dev/sd0. what do you think is the reason? thanks.

If he is running Fedora 7, it's because that release uses libata which handles all IDE devices as SCSI.

The /dev/sdX designation classically refers to SCSI devices, while the /dev/hdX designation refers to IDE.

However, in later kernels, all handling for IDE has been made consistent with SCSI naming (as was done with USB, Firewire and actual SCSI drives).
