Dell Dimension Desktop 4600 graphics

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop 4600, currently running Window$ XP, which I have tried to install various distros on. None of these have been successful (except for Kubuntu) and even if the install went OK, it cant boot into any sort of GUI.

I've tried MDK 10.1 (I love it!!!), it refused to use the graphical installer and when it boots into the GUI the screen is scrambled. I've also tried Lycoris but despite using the graphical installer, the KDE fails to initialise. Why?

Has anyone else had these sorts of problems?

It would seem that the PC is generally incompatable with X server, I tried installing Solaris UNIX onto it, and the X server refused to initiate.
