Computer not recognizing modem

I would like to set up my modem yet I cannot figure out to. All I know about it is that it is internal and mounted in a pci slot. I have tried a variety of things but the computer doesnt seem to recognize it. I do not need to configure it to reach the internet, simply to be able to send commands to it.

thanks in advance

If it is a hardware modem then you could attempt to send commands directly to it such as:

echo atdt 555-1212 > /dev/ttyS0

this tells my modem (on comm port #1) to open a line and dial that number.

echo ath > /dev/ttyS0

hangs up the modem.

try sending those commands to each comm port and see if you get any response.
/ttyS0 =com1
/ttyS1 =com2 etc...

If not then it's probably a software modem and you'll have to install a driver for it depending on the manufacture and your distro.

good luck

KC
