choosing between a Canon LIDE 120 and an Epson V550 scanner

Needing to replace an elderly Epson Perfection 1250 (it has served me long and well) and the two models that are being recommended are the

Epson Perfection V550
and the
Canon LIDE 120

The Epson is higher end than I need, but Epson has served me well.
Has anybody had good or bad experiences with either of these? (I realize they are very different prices and potentials).

Compatibility with Linux and built to last are the main things I am thinking of.

Linux compatibility is THE major criteria.

I have a Canon LiDE 210. It is fast and quality is good enough for what I need. I don't see any artifacts in document scanning. I don't know how good picture scanning is if you have special needs for gamma and reproducing fidelity.

The Canon LiDE 220 is stil available and presumably the successor of the LiDE 210.

This one I have for over 4 years. Scanning about 50-100 documents/month. The previous one was beyond repair because the airconditioner had leaked water onto it. Strange as it may sound, the scanner is completely closed, glued together, impossible to open, impossible to service but it sucked water like a sponge.

I'm still using a Canon LIDE 25, so they were built to last when that was made!

Brant,

Another happy LiDE 210 user here.

Just install simple-scan and off you go.

This model has been replaced with the very similar LiDE 220:

I went with the Epson, and it runs fine.
One advantage to waiting forever for an upgrade—the improvement in speed is astonishing!
