CD ROM Problems

Hi there, I'm trying to install a program and it requires some files that are on the CDROM drive, it ejects the drive and gives me the message to insert my distro disk #1 in, and I do that and it ejects it again asking for the disk again. It asks for /dev/cdrom/ but somehow when I do my config for my cdrom it doesn't show my first CD ROM drive as /dev/cdrom/.

The following is what someone sent to me via e-mail from a Linux e-mail listing.

<name withdrawn>, some distros when loading on a box with more
than one cdrom have the first as /dev/cdrom0 and the
second as /dev/cdrom1. If you can switch to a command
shell during the installation you might see if there
is a /dev/cdrom and if so what it is pointing to.

If you do a "ls -l /dev/cdrom*" you should discover
that /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/hd? whichever cdrom
is first in the IDE chain. if you do not have a
/dev/cdrom in the list simply type "ln -s /dev/cdrom0
/dev/cdrom" as root and it will make a link that will
let you continue loading.

Hope this helps.

Here is what showed up on my screen in the terminal:

[doctor@localhost doctor]$ ls -l /dev/cdrom*
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Mar 15 03:44 /dev/cdrom -> cdroms/cdrom0
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Mar 15 03:44 /dev/cdrom0 -> cdroms/cdrom0
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Mar 15 03:44 /dev/cdrom1 -> cdroms/cdrom1

/dev/cdroms:
total 0
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Dec 31 1969 cdrom0 -> ../ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Dec 31 1969 cdrom1 -> ../ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/cd

(doctor is my username).

I'm using Mandrake 10.1 Community.

I am STILL having problems:

ADDITIONAL: This is what I get in the dialog box when I try to install the programs.

Please insert the medium named "Installation CD 1 (x86) " on device [/dev/cdrom]

if u dont have a link /dev/cdrom, make a softlink /dev/cdrom to your cdrom device (something like /dev/hdc if its an IDE cdrom)

might work,

hehe ok

easy way to test which is the cdrom u want to use:
the cd tray should open..

eject /dev/hda

if nothing happens continue:

eject /dev/hdb

eject /dev/hdc

eject /dev/hdd

until the one u wants opens..

or u can list

ls -la /dev/cdrom*

and see what devices r there.. i only have cdrom, but u might have cdrom1 cdrom2...
i get this:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2005-03-19 13:07 /dev/cdrom -> hdd

i alredy have the symlink pointing to the device (to learn about symlinks google a bit, its good to know the basics...)

if u dont, u make one like this:

ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom

and u have a symlink

srry have to go, if more questions i will be back later

ashley
