Can Linux talk to a networked HP Deskjet 5850?

I just bought a HP Deskjet 5850, which has built in wired and wireless networking. I'm using its wireless connection to print from the various Windows machines on my net.

Now I'd like to get the Linux machines printing to it, but I have no idea how to connect. I'm wondering if it will look like an HPJetDirect protocol, and I might try that as an experiment, but I am hoping someone has already succeeded and can spare me the experiment time.

THanks in advance...

OK, I figured it out, very simple and easy. Using CUPS, set it up as a "Networked JetDirect" printer, and plug in the IP address. The list of supported printer types includes hp5850.

I had no idea "JetDirect" described this printer. ANyway, it works just fine.

Hi MarkSWarren,

I have a similar problem printing to an HP DeskJet 5850. With Linux only PC's I'm unable to set an IP address for it. How did you solve this to configure the printer in the first place?

hi,

i am having a similar problem but in my case it's the URI that's giving me problems...

HP DeskJet 5850 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
Description:
Location: http://10.0.1.2
Printer State: processing, accepting jobs.
"Unable to connect to printer (retrying in 30 seconds): Connection timed out"
Device URI: socket://10.0.0.2:9100

this is how it looks for now, i tried various different things for URI but still i just can't get it to work..

any help would be very appreciated..
thanks,
