The usual gotcha here is wpa_passphrase. Man wpa_passphrase.

When you have your key, you have to pass it through wpa_passphrase to get another key, which will work.
Code:
bash-4.2$ wpa_passphrase my-essid   01234567890123456789
network={
	ssid="my-essid"
	#psk="01234567890123456789"
	psk=b8f8c9234e68fe991b30db96b4cfc49cabd72451d5869153fed2cae6265a0eb3
}
