Can't fully uninstall printer so it can be reinstalled.

Using Mepis 8. Had Samsung USB ML2010 working. But then tried to install a network connected printer and had problems. I then thought I had uninstalled everything but now when using KDE --> print system it shows the ML-2010 in the menu but when going into print manager the printer is not shown and if you try to add a new printer the USB option is "unhighlighted" meaning it is not available as a selection. Trying to print to the printer does not work.

How can I get the ML2010 fully removed?

Anyone know what files under CUPS or KDE to delete or modify?

What software did you uninstall?

If you have CUPS installed, try re-configuring your USB printer.

Example:
kdesu firefox

(then supply the root password when prompted)

When firefox starts up, enter this url: http://localhost:631

In the cups home page, cleck the Add Printer button, and go through the steps of configuring your usb printer.

A very nice feature of cups is that it allows you to configure virtual printers while having only one physical printer.
For example, if you do a lot of printing, every time you want to print something, you enter the page setup to select portrait/landscape, color mode, number of copies, etc. If you use cups, you can setup 6 virtual printers for portrait and 6 more for landscape (draft greyscale, normal greyscale, letter quallity greyscale, draft color, normal color, and photo quality color). Then, when it's time toprint, skip the page setup and go directly to the print page, select the virtual printer from the dropdown (which shows "defauot printer") and set the number of copies you want.
It's a great time saver when you don't have to go to page setup first to make the selections: they're already set in the virtual printers.

have a look in /etc/cups/printers.conf, and restart cups

I had the ML2010 installed and tried to add an ML2851 (with ethernet interface) as a network printer. The network printer would not work (bad driver or something) and I removed it using the print manager under KDE. When I did this the ML2010 quit working so I tried to remove it and reinstall it. The ikon for the ML2010 was removed from the printer manager screen but was not removed from the menu under K-->print system-->

The printer shows up if one goes into terminal and types lsusb, and it shows up in kinfocenter, but if I go to url: http://localhost:631, the CUPS system there does not see the printer (it says no printers are installed), but it will not reinstall the printer either.

I have tried to look at /etc/cups/printers.conf, even under root, but I cannot get anything to tell me the contents of the file. What editor should be used to look in this file?

/etc/cups/printers.conf is a locked file; root access only. To view the contents, something like 'sudo less /etc/cups/printers.conf' will show you the contents. To edit, 'sudo vim /etc/cups/printers.conf' to open the file with vim, or 'kdesu kate /etc/cups/printers.conf' of open it with kate (gui editor).

Cups also requires root access in order to add/remove printers. You must be running the browser as root in order to add printers, or run this command in terminal, with the usb printer plugged in: /usr/lib64/cups-autoconfig/cups-autoconfig --add (in a 64 bit OS; there is a similar command for 32 bit systems).
