Buffer I/O error on hard drive

When i boot up my fedora core 3 2.6.11-1.27_FC3 kernel...I get these errors (from what i can remember):

Starting redhat nash...

Buffer I/O error on device hdb .....

I keep getting a couple and then the booting process resumes..only to hang again when it reaches the "press Y to check filesystem integrity "...wether i do the check or not.

I guess there are bad sectors on my root partition or something...a few questions:

1. is there any way I can fix that?
2. If it is not fixable...will installing the new FC4 over this dual boot installation find the errors?
3. is there anything special that i need to do before i install FC4 over FC3 that is dual booted with XP?

i'm a noob...please help!

/dev/hdb is your slave drive on your Master IDE 1. Is your Linux on a separate hard drive?

If you re-install it, or upgrade to FC4, it should fix it up.

I don't dual boot so I don't know if there's any special things you need to do first. Hopefully someone else will know.

good luck
