Big Problem with 3ware 9550sx compiling

Hi,
ive got some big problems with my 3ware 9550sx sata raidcontroller.
Ive downloaded an modded installer for debian sarge kernel 2.4
which includes the 3ware drivers to install direct on the raid.

My Problem now is, i dont have highmem support, so the kernel accepts only 1GB of RAM.
I need to recompile the kernel with highmem support, but after reboot with the new kernel i get an kernel panic while trying to load files.

I downloaded the sources for kernel 2.4 for the 3ware raidcard, but im not sure what to do with em.
The only thing i done with the files was
"Make -f Makefile.rh" which gives me an 3w***.h, 3w***.o and 3w***.c.
I copied the files into the folder:
/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi
but i dont find the module in the scsi drivers in menuconfig.
These steps i done:
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get -u upgrade
apt-get install kernel-source-2.4*
ln -s /src/usr/kernel-source* /usr/src/linux
make -f Makefile.rh (3ware sources)
// 3Ware source copy
cp 3xx.* /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/
make dep clean
make oldconfig
make menuconfig
// I dont find any 3x9 module under the scsi tab
// In Processortype ive chosen highmem support and 4GB RAM support
make dep clean
make vmImage
make modules
make modules-install
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/vmImage /boot/testkernel
// configured grub
Reboot "Kernel panic"
Please can anybody help me, iīve red alot of kernelcompiling, but i cant find a solution, iam very new to linux.
Thx!!

Do you know what the error was that causes the kernel panic? I had that problem before when I did not include Reiserfs (which is my partition type). I would get an error saying could not mount the file system or something along those lines.

I dont use reiserfs, i use use ext2 on all partitions.
Im not sure how to compile from 2.4 to 2.6, but it also have to work with 2.4 kernel because i have the source drivers but i dont know how to merge them into my .config for compiling the new kernel, iam trying so since so many days, it would be very cool if someone could give me a hand, there must be someone out which have an 3ware card on a debian sarge 2.4 kernel.
Thx!

take the basic config file from your 2.4 source, before any editing.
then copy it to the /usr/scr/2.6X/.config
then run
make oldconfig
i have that controller, works great on 2.6
