Gnome-disk-utility on RHEL5?

I'm trying to install gnome-disk-utility-2.30.1 using this guide http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs...k-utility.html

I'm having doubts because I can't find anyone who has tried installing this on a RHEL5 server.

I can get the el6 rpm but I am also not sure if it is possible/smart to install a RHEL6 rpm on a RHEL5 box.

Does anyone know if el6 rpms work in a RHEL5 environment?

Thanks in advance.

Not smart, don't do it. If it works, it's an anomaly. Anything with substantial dependencies will likely 1) not work; and/or 2) cause problems on your system.

I did a quick 'net search on gnome-disk-utility, and I see that it's available for several Debian-based systems. What problems do you need to solve with that utility? There may be something that is included with RHEL's RHN (or perhaps in EPEL) that can do it for you just as well.

Ok. Thanks for your advice. I want to install the tool on RHEL5 because it is the best GUI disk management tool that I know of. It comes standard with RHEL6 but not 5. And I was trained using the tool in the RHCSA classes.

I'm trying to follow the guide by compiling the program from source but have ran into one dependency issue (liked you've guessed). It's looking for and updated version of glib2.

Should I update my current version of glib2 to 2.20+ or keep it at 2.12.3 and call it a day and look for a RHEL5 alternative to gnome-disk-utility?

Thanks in advance.

Fair enough.

That's what I (personally) would do.

You might take a look at gparted to see if it's something you could use. If so, you can install it via EPEL (see the "How can I use these extra packages?" section).

Thanks anomie. GParted seems like a viable alternative. I'm going to explore that route.
