Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Best advice for a modem

I am new to Linux and have installed Fedora Core 1 from "Linux
fo Non-Geeks." I set up a dual boot using 2 different drives. I need to add a modem as my original system has a winmodem. Can you please advise me on what external modem to use?

I purchased a Smartlink PCI modem that is supposedly compatible with Linux. I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

Thanks,

Ben

Did the modem come with a CD? If so, was there anything on the CD about Linux? Having you tried googling for your model number with the word "linux?"

As far as getting another modem, if you have a serial port on your computer, any external modem should work. If you have ISA slots in your computer, any ISA card that you can jumper the IRQ and address on should be pretty easy (if you have a spare IRQ to use). I have no experience with PCI modems, so I can't make any recommendations there. Also, Linux Questions maintains a Linux hardware compatibility list. Click on HCL at the top of this page.

Personally, I would avoid the company Best Data, as I have one of their modems and they have been nonresponsive to my problems.

If you are now looking for ISA slots, they're the extra long grey slots, usually below the PCI slots. You are not likely to find them on anything newer than a Pentium 2. I am using a USR internal 56K X2 hardware modem. It works great. Xandros picked it up right away. The only problem I have is in finding an ISP that supports X2 technology. They (such ISPs) are hard to find. At least where I am. I have a Pentium 3, 1G HDD, and an AMD Athlon XP neither w/ISA slots.

So, my Linux box is the old P2, overclocked to 500mhz. I am not complaining, since I already had the modem, it's reliable, but a 33.6 conneck sure seems slow. Heck, it is slow. Sigh.

I don't know if you can get a PCI card w/ISA slots built on or not. If so, I'd like to know about them. Anyone?
