pcmcia modem advice please

Hi. I am going to install linux on my laptop, which comes only with a winmodem, so it seems I'll have to get a modem for it.

As I am making my first steps in the world of Linux, and as I really know very little about hardware, I would appreciate any advice or recommendation as to what modem I should buy, what I should be aware of before buying, and how much I can expect such a modem to cost.

Thank you

my xircom pcmcia combo nic/modem works fine on RhL 8/Mandrake 9/Slackware 8.1 (ye - even on windoze )). i have a dell latitu CPx laptop (company issued).

the best that u could do is to check the hardware database of your distro for compatible hardware. and survey http://linux-laptop.net/

also, its a good idea to get the latest release of the distro that you like.

hth.

What type of winmodem is it? Did you check linmodems.org to see if it is supported? Could save you some money.

ess

Thanks for your replies. My modem is a built-in ESS (my computer is an hp xe3 notebook) , for which there are currently no drivers, as far as I could find.
