Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 LT output issue

I am new to the world of multichannel audio so pls excuse any statement improper.
I am using Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 LT with gentoo. I am sure I have the drivers and alsa installed correctly but I am not able to hear sound from all channels. I hear sound only from front and BS/HP. Not from channels marked Rear and CW.
I currently dont have a 5.1 surround sound system only 2.1. So in such a situation if i have to assert that all the channels are producing output is it a sensible thing to plug in a set of head phones into each channel and expect to hear sound?
Any pointer will be greatly appreciated.
