ATI Video Card Driver Issue
Trying to figure out how to install an ATI driver for my Radeon 9000 video card on Redhat 9. The instructions on the site are as follows:
For each of these steps you will have to be logged on as the root user.
cd to the directory containing the ATI Driver rpm package
Issue the following command:
rpm -Uh --force <ati_package_name>.rpm
Note any error messages that may occur while installing (see below)
Run the fglrxconfig utility to configure the driver
Answer the questions as prompted
When asked to generate an XF86Config-4 file, answer y
Restart and log into X-Windows
Run fglrxinfo to verify the driver is installed correctly
When i do this, i reboot my machine and and it can't start X, which leads to going back to the default settings to get to X. The result I get when I type "rpm -Uh --force <ati_package_name>.rpm " is:
*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
*** WARNING ***
Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system.
You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir
and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module.
Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh'
in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository.
(see readme.txt for more details.)
As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated
OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance.
failed.
*** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme.
So then I attempt to do the following:
1. cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
2. sh make.sh
I get an error saying that the kernel source could not be found under:
/usr/src
SO then i try the following:
1. cd /usr/src
2. ls -l
3. ln -s kernel-source-x.x.x linux
ATI indicates that the "kernel-source-x.x.x" is the name of my kernel directory. I have no idea where this is or what the name of the directory is. Once again, its redhat 9.0. What is the name of the file or directory that i'm trying to make a link to under this directory?
The link to ATI's site which has this info is:
>ati.com/support/infobase/linuxhowto-ati.html<
I did run the "bash check.sh" command and made sure that my Xfree86 version was 4.3 and that the software that i downloaded was for the 4.3.
