ATI Radeon blurry distored in X (proprietary driver)

I have the latest proprietary drivers for ATI Radeon PowerColor 9600 Pro working. But I get distorted, blurry text and artefacts on windows in X (2D). 3D is fine. A screenshot:

www DOT utsc DOT utoronto DOT ca/~01kassil/blurry_screen.jpeg

Fiddling with driver section in XFree86Config has yielded only this: If I disable 2D acceleration, quality improves at expense of speed. Using external GART has no effect.

Anyone else out there putting up with this annoyance? Any ideas appreciated !!

Distro is Gentoo. Kernel is 2.6.9. xfree86 4.3.0.
System is an AthlonXP on a MSI KT3 board with the VIA KT333 chipset.

For those that have a similar problem with the Radeon 9600 Pro gfx chip (I have PowerColor board) disabling Fast Writes within the BIOS setup solved my problem. So my theory is this is an issue between my VIA KT333 board, AGPGART, and ATI Radeons.
