ATi Drivers + XV = Crash on two diff distros

Once I installed the ATi drivers on SuSE 10.1, I started Xine with xv and it crashed. I later saw that this problem could be caused if xv is missing, but I can confirm it is installed. Later, I installed Fedora Core 5, used the fglrx drivers from livna, enabled them, and the same thing happens, and xv still is installed. If I don't use xv, there's no problem, but I'd still like to be able to use it. The overall system is less stable with ATi drivers. OpenGL works great.

This problem is about the AMD X2 3800 / MSI RD480 / MSI X1600Pro system in signature.

Backup your setup and try down grade Xorg to 6.8. Do not use 6.9 because it has memory leaks and other problems. If you do not want to do this, use OpenGL for video playback.

Hmm, I do see that your module is looking for xorg 6.8 and you actually have 7.0...don't know if thats a problem. Also I cant remember if you need to be loading that dri module with fglrx drivers, I dont think you do, and thats why you get all that file not found crap. Also, try running xvinfo in x and see what that tells you.

Ah didn't see that last post, I dont use your distro, but I play with xv fine on xorg 7.0, I'd try recompiling your fglrx driver and reinstalling before going through the trouble of downgrading.

I disabled DRI and problems disappeared.

Is it worth to try to get DRI working or not?

Looks like ATi's cheesy drivers cause problems...

Dri is for older ati cards that the drivers straight from ati dont support, or if you dont want to use proprietary drivers. If you are using fglrx they arent needed. You have to use one or the other though both causes issues obviously. I'd recommend staying with the fglrx.

Ati radeon 9200

I am new to this linux thing so please be patient. I have installed Ferora Core5, and would like to get my dual monitors working, so I can use it with graphics, I downloaded the driver from Ati but on installation, was told the file libeexpat.so.1 was missing, where can I find this file. Ernie

Don't get ATi's own drivers from ati.com, there's an easier way that will not mess up your computer as much.

Have you added the Livna repository?
If not you miss a lot of things... (MP3, WMV, Quicktime, DVD support, NTFS, etc.)

It's all on http://www.fedorafaq.org/

First, when you go on the page to know how to install the ATi drivers, he tell you to do this
http://www.fedorafaq.org/#yumconf

before
http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon

Notes:
If you want a terminal, you can use the "Run" window and type xterm or konsole (If you have KDE)

If you have a dual-core processor, kmod-fglrx-smp does not exist, use kmod-fglrx, it works.

Between step 8 and 9 of Radeon drivers installation, there's something missing :
=========
You need to type "aticonfig --initial=dual-head"
And then type "nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Go down with the arrows to

Section "Module"

put a square (#) in front of Load "dri" - If you have an ATi Radeon 9 or X-series, for the others, I don't know.

Do Ctrl-X, confirm to save
=========
continue with fedorafaq.org guide

If screen(s) is/are blank after "init 5", you'll have to play a bit in the xorg.conf file again.

Ask if you need more info.

Hi Antoine, thanks for the info, but unfortunately I had problems, probably due to my stupidity.
I went through what you suggested, but when I rebooted I could not get the screen up, so not knowing what else to do, I reinstalled. I have sofar got to the point where it says setseboo1 -P allow_execmod=1, not sure if the last digit on setseboo1 is a fig1 or an L, tried them both, got the message Command not found. Where do I go from here, apart from the nut house that is. Ernie

it's an "L", copy and paste with Shift-Insert.

Are you sure you typed "su -" and logon with root password?

When you got a blank screen, you should have done Ctrl-Alt-F1 to return to terminal.

So, what you should add is that in
Section "Screen"
with
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
change
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
to
Monitor "Monitor0"

you don't have to reboot, just type init 5 to return to X.

You might only have one monitor working. If both are the same type, or support the same resolutions, you could do

Section "Screen"
with
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[1]"
change
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[1]"
to
Monitor "Monitor0"
(Yes, it's Monitor0 - zero)

Thanks Antoine,
did as you sujested with the copy paste, but it still does not accept it (setsebool: command not found} is there something missing here, apart from some grey matter. The reason for the mistaken L for one, the writing on the web pages is so small my old eyes have difficulties. Ernie

There's a way to change text size in your browser, in Window - Text Size I think.

You don't need this command if you don't have SELinux. (It seems that it's the case)
To see if you have it, type
yum list selinux* in a terminal
if something shows up as installed you have it.

If you don't just skip setsebool.

I don't know, the only thing that could happen is that you'll get some error messages telling that your video driver has been modified I think. I don't think that this step is really important anyways.

Hi Antoine,
Not having much luck here, there has been a change I now have the ATI conrol panel. the second monitor is going mad with lines running across the screen. I can swtch from monitor to monitor in that panel and change the colours, I suppose thats a start. I canīt get any of your istructions to be accepted by the console, just keep getting the message no file or directory. Also was not able to get the consol to bring up gedit. But did get the xorg.conf up in gedit, but it would not let me save the changes. This is becoming very frustrating, might have to revert back to the other one. one other change has occured the scroll wheel on the mouse is acting very eratic.Ernie
