ATI has had and given a bunch of trouble to the Linux user a lot in the past. I can't speak for now because I stick to nVidia. The support for ATI + Linux on Doom3 was after-the-fact and might say something about the quality of the drivers produced (
fglrx); it may not mean much, but if you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend an nVidia card if D3 means a lot to you. It may work great, if nobody can provide you with specific benchmarks or timedemo's of you specific card, you could be taking a gamble as to if it will work at all.

The DRI drivers for ATI cards may run the game with some tweaking ( you need to apply the S3TC patch for instance ). But the rendering quality will be sub-optimal, as a number of important graphic features are not available in the DRI drivers.
Do not send me reports about the game not working on ATI card[s]. Either with fglrx driver or the DRI driver. We know about this already, and at this point there is nothing we can do.
