I have an interest in getting a new laptop. I would like to hear some input on the AMD Athlon 64 processor and the laptops that are available. I understand SuSE is a 64 bit OS and I have used it in the past, so I would start out with it. What kind of pro's and con's are there?
I recently bought a Compaq R3240 laptop with AMD64 3200+. Only problem I've had is with the 15.4" widescreen LCD, which uses an odd 1280x800 native res. In fact, at this point I'd say there's better 64-bit support in Linux than Windows! Was a steal for US$1050 (after $280 in rebates and not counting taxes) IMHO.
Distribution: Only used RH but have heard good things about Mandrake. BSD might be interesting.

I have an HP Pavilion w/AMD 64. I just upgraded from Fedora Core 2 to Core 3 and have installed the 64 bit version. It installed without any significant problems. Of cource, it doesn't seem to have solved any of my hardware issues: wireless doesn't work and far as I can see, may never work.
For best/easiest results, you could buy a pre-loaded laptop. Presumably, they would have everything working. Of course I would test that assumption (try the wireless connection if its onboard, the touchpad, a USB drive, the CD/DVD burner). The wireless and CD burner are the things I miss most. If those things work, thats great and you simply use the box w/o first "fixing" it.
Good luck. Despite the hardware issues, I have enjoyed the HP laptop.
