I have an amd athlon-xp 2600+ running knoppix. The processor runs on a Soyo KT400 motherboard. I have a huge fan blowing on the open case because it seems like its having overheating problems. The fan helped for a while, but the box keeps wanting to overheat when i'm using CPU intensive applications such as mythtv (when watching TV for example).

The computer emits a high pitched squeal and just turns itself off. Does anyone have any recommendations whether its software/files I can use to diagnose the exact problem, or whether I need to replace something like the heatsink-

the sqeal probably indicates you need a new fan on the heatsink, the bearings are shot!
