Unhappy ASUS VivoPC (zen-style) with ubuntu / kubuntu

I installed Kubuntu 14.10 onto an ASUS Vivopc Intel Core I3-3217U.
The pulseaudio sound settings only show one possible audio output, "built-in analog stereo" and it only makes sounds through the built-in speaker.
How do I get it to detect/use the SPDIF digital audio output?

Also, I noticed it locked up quite frequently while I was restoring data on its first day of use. Does not inspire confidence.

Cute PC! Just perusing specs, I see TOSLINK. Perhaps start there.
