I am now unsure if the L3 cache is enabled and, if not, how to enable it at all.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3 rev 2.0 (BIOS version FI)
CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 7750 Black Edition
RAM: Kingston Valueram 2x2GB CL5

If you need anymore info, I'll be happy to provide it of course.

A good and relevant question at last
-or-
I have the same CPU and wondered myself

My 7750 is on a GA-M56S-S3 socket AM2 mother board, and the L3 cache is reported neither with the command "dmidecode" nor "lshw".

However, I found this, which seem to me to indicate that the problem is that the cache is not registered rather than that the cache is not activated.

http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/4/2/171

Using "cat", I found this on my system, seeming to indicate that my L3 cache is active. This seems to be for one core; there is the same for cpu1, but the L3 cache is shared. I am using openSUSE 11.0

xxxxxxxxxx@generic-hostname:~> cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cache/index3/*

You might try a similar cat command on yours, or just follow the file sequence down to the CPU.

As a matter of simple hubris, I replaced a well functioning AMD X2 4800+ CPU with an all too cheap AMD 7750 and things quickened a bit. I do not know if this was because of the L3 cache, because of the Kuma core of the 7750, or because after I paid money I wanted it to happen.

The result of the exact same cat command:
Code:
know-where-to-run linux-2.6.30-rc3-git1 # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cache/index3/*
Entry: 0
Reads: Allowed	New Entries: Allowed
SubCache: 0	Index: 0

So indeed there is a sign of life for the L3 cache. I do think because of the lack of support for the K10 core, things might not get reported/detected properly. Sadly enough in the 2.6.30 git releases I see nog signs of even basic support for this core yet. I do hope the devs get around to this.
I myself replaced a X2 4200+ with this 7750. I noticed a slight speedup at boot and when compiling stuff. Overall performance seems better, but that's a combination of the new cpu and and extra 2GB of RAM on top of the 2GB I already had.
Of course, if anyone can explain or help with this matter....I'm still open for suggestions

I looked further.

I looked at my boot log in /var/log/boot.msg and, whereas I can see that L1 of 64K and L2 of 512K is mentioned for each core, I could find nothing about L3 or its expected size. Again, it may be activated but not reported there or simply not be activated at all, unless I can't find it. Where is that Andrew Morton when he is needed?

And again, same here. /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg are both showing me L1 and L2 but no L3 cache.

I'm hoping for proper K10 support in the upcoming kernel releases. Maybe then we can take full advantage of this cpu's features.

In my tower cabinet...

On my AMD X2 7750 I installed an Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 PWM CPU cooler. It runs at about 1000 RPM, is quiet, holds the temperature to just under 40 degrees centigrade, and was not expensive.

Any similar high capacity cooler would do as well.

All readers may consider this post a rant.
