Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

AMD R9 280x Crashing System

I'm on Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon and the AMD driver keeps screwing everything up. I tried installing fglrx, fglrx-updates (both native to mint) and the AMD Catalyst driver from their website but it screws up my system. The only driver that works is the native xserver-xorg-video-ati. Running anything else breaks xserver and I'm not able to boot. Any ideas?

The only advice I can give you is:

a) look for your video card model (you haven't provided it here)
b) search the forums & google around for someone who has similiar problem on the same hardware.

Looks like unclear statement to me - how is that possible that you're not able to "boot" when xserver breaks up?
You don't even get to the command promt or boot in the recovery mode? Precise yourself please.
