ok, here is the deal. i have a perfectly running RH 9.0 system using the 2.4.20 kernel with one problem in that it doesn't recognize my IDE chipset such that i was getting only 4 MB reads/sec. to the HD; so i downloaded and built the 2.4.29 kernel with the same configuration as the 2.4.20 kernel. when i boot this kernel i get many boot time messages like "/proc/bus/usb" does not exist, etc. such that the USB mouse and other USB devices don't work. i don't understand the root problem. here is the fstab file
give you ? If it doesn't contain usb-storage, usbcore, scsi-mod, hci_usb at the very least, and you aren't able to insert them as modules (use insmod <modulename>), then you're best bet is to re-compile the kernel, and check that you've actually included them.
Regarding the ethernet card - what's the make and model, and did it work with your previous kernel ?
you are right. there don't appear to be any modules in /lib/modules/2.4.29 and i can't understand why. i took the configuration file from 2.4.20-31 and did a 'make oldconfig' and then did a 'make dep', 'make bzImage', 'make install', 'make modules', and then a 'make modules_install'. i don't understand why the same modules were not built and installed as in the previous version.
btw, my card is a BroadCom 5700 for which i have the source drivers from BroadCom and i can make and install them as modules afterwards so hopefully no problems there as it did work fine with the previous kernel.
