Thumbs down usb problems, kernel ??? old technology?

Dear sir :

I have 2 usb enclosed box (cd-rom,hd)1 usb floppy.
my pc bios support all kind of bootup devices.but the problem is that i can't
boot up linux cd-rom and usb hd and can't be mounted .
my kernel version is the latest stable one, should i complie the kernel from sounce code? and how?

I have installed 2 distros in my usb hd box(sdb)but can't boot up even when i have bootloader ready?usb cd-rom,usb floppy also can't.

usb cd-rom (scd0)
usb hd (sdb)
usb fd (sda1)
how can i be able to mount all these usb things and auto boot ?

by the way,i have 1 internal, atapi dvd-ram(rw) drive which is about 4.7gb per side (over 9gb total)and good for make it like virtual hard disk. (hdc)(scondary master)
my pc's bios also support it to boot but the problem is how can i make it to boot linux system and mounted?
i had tried install distro there during setup and expected to repartition and format but distro doesn't show list this drive as a hard disk so i can not install???

it is very handy when you can use dvd-ram(rw)discs to switch between os just insert the dvds containing different distro os.and good for backup, exp too.!

I don't know if any 1 tries before ?

after all, i want to have usb hd and this dvd-ram(rw) able to boot load many distro !!!

why is it always not catch up to currect tech ? nearly all problems linux have are about moderm technology like usb, sata, scsi, hyper threading....,interface...etc can not supported by linux kernel so caused install problems ???

As a general rule manufacturers release new hardware and Windows drivers at the same time. Then a volunteer writes Linux support for the devices. When the volunteer asks the manufacturer for the specifications for the latest hardware some manufacturers hand it out and others refuse because it is a trade secret. If the specifications are a trade secret then the volunteer has to reverse engineer the hardware before he can start writing the Linux support code.

The situation is slowly getting better as more manufacturers write Linux support code and/or hand out the hardware specs to Linux developers.

I avoid the problem in two ways. I buy a lot of cheap second hand hardware which is old enough to already have Linux support. When I buy new parts I use Google to make sure that the hardware is supported by Linux before I buy it.

I do not know. I think that how you do it varies from one distribution to another. What distributions did you install on your usb-hd.? Maybe somebody who uses one of those distributions can tell you how to boot it on usb-hd.
