Xorg with ati not working

Ok So Upgraged my system to a bad MSI ati motherboard. (NEVER AGAIN)...... Had problems installing slackware 10.1 and the newest one not being able to boot of the CD. So I guess I'm going to try to fix this problem gentoo install that still left on my harddrive.. I have a Ati express 200M which is the only problem I have right now... My question is I have Xorg install and dont think configureed correctly but I'm not able to get vesa working or able to get X to come up before I install a gui such as kde. OR should I just get video drivers from ati and install and work on that?

My current setup is gentoo network install 2005.1 using latest kernel from gentoo..... I had to install from knoppix due to I can't get past booting off the CD with various option in the BIOS... I have MSI RS480M2 with the latest BIOS....

I would recommend getting X up and running normally, that way the worst that happens is you are without 3D acceleration. If X is up and running, then try the ATI install. I would imagine there is probably a Slackware FAQ somewhere for specific instructions dealing with ATI drivers, as I know that Linux support from them isn't perfect yet.
