XDG User Directory

Hi.

Sometimes I see a message in terminal similar:

XDG User Directory not found. Defaulting to...

Can anyone tell me:

- what is this XDG User Directory
- how to define it (is this a environment variable)
- what is its location usually

???

Thanks.

Thanks!

May I ask you -since you running Debian- can you tell me about some of the XDG user directories and its contents (where are they targeted at, not the dirs and files of the target)

Edit:

My Puppy doesn't have xdg-user-dirs installed (command not found)

Below are the executable in /bin:
Quote:
jo@Willy:~$ ls /bin | grep xdg
xdg-desktop-icon
xdg-desktop-menu
xdg-email
xdg-icon-resource
xdg-mime
xdg-open
xdg-screensaver
xdg-settings
xdg-user-dir
xdg-user-dirs-update
There will be a folder in /etc called xdg where it gets configuration information.
XDG basically set's up links to local user directories for applications to use depending on which user is logged in.

Ok, thanks a lot.

Now I can recall the exact message: xdg-user-dir not found. Defaulting to...

What is the content/target of xdg-user-dir in your Debian (I suppose it's equal to those in Ubuntu)?

I want to define this target of xdg-user-dir to avoid these messages and to see what may happen and/or if it will have any effects on my Art Studio Puppy.

Thanks again.

That's still not producing any Google hits for me. It would be nice if you were to provide the exact exact message.

For info, the most common result of a search for "xdg" "not set. Defaulting to..." is XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to.

Code:
mkdir notroot
wget http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/x/xdg-user-dirs/xdg-user-dirs_0.15-2+b1_amd64.deb
dpkg-deb -x xdg-user-dirs_0.15-2+b1_amd64.deb ./notroot
I use dpkg-deb with Puppy all the time. It is standard in the Ubuntu-based pups.

Thanks at all.

Ok, this means I would have to try to run lots of programs by terminal to see its output again and to get the one and only exact message.

I'm going to return to here when found...

Thanks again.
