On knoppix theres a thing called SMB its a amba client and works like My Network on Windows , just start it and it will find any shareable shares on the other PC, you can then access that remote share with Knoppix. You might also like to take Lleb_KCir advice and run an anti virus program over your dead XP box just in case you have a virus.

Finally , thanks for updating your profile.

.. And amsba will work even if I have never properly set up a network before, but just happen to have a network card on each box and a crosswire cable?

Not quite, you will have to assign static IP address to each one , I don't think this will work with DHCP, something like 192.168.70.1 and 192.168.70.2 with the corresponding netmask , and no default firewalls either, then you should be able to ping each one and finally use SMB client: SAMBA is only(?) needed for a server.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm actually looking for a step by step tutorial to learn to do exactly that. Your description, though no doubt accurate, is too cryptic for someone who has never done anything like that.

Any suggesions?

To mount a windows share from Knoppix is easy

1. Share a folder on your healthy XP box
2. Boot up broken box with knoppix
3. Enter the following commands ( you'll need to replace the relevant bits)
cd mnt
mkdir winbox
mount -t smbfs -o username=xxxx,workgroup=xxxx //ip_of_xp_box/shared_folder_name /mnt/winbox
cp -r folders_you_wish_to_recover /mnt/winbox

Quick question, what is OS is running on the two PCs you are trying connect?

Usually there is an installation guide this will normally which will take you thru the steps , you need to know how to set up your network cards with static address, you may need to search the Fedora website for this. I do know that FC4 has a Sys Admin GUI which allows you to make the changes, unfortunately I'm not running FC4 right now socan't really help.

Edit: I keep refering to the SMB client its actual name is Smb4K

Once you setup your ethernet and ping each PC then the rest should follow without too many problems

For linux to linux you can use NFS and or rcp or srcp. If you google for linux HOWTO you will find all the answers you are looking for, Have Fun
