win xp rescue
 

Hello

As a newbie to linux I understand there is a way to rescue win xp files from a system crash by using a cd live disc. Knoppix seems to be mentioned a lot in my researching.
I have a router/telephone line/broadband connection/ethnet connections and this also seems to be the preferred way of a rescue. However I am stuck after this. So two pc's are connected together via ethnet & router but what next please.

Are you trying to do a remote rescue?
For a XP crash you place Knoppix or similar Live CD in the crashed PCs CD drive and boot it, from there you can mount the XP partitions and hopefully extract the files you need, you will also need some place to put the files perhaps this is where the ethernet line comes into it?

Thank you for the help. No remote rescue, just two pc's connected together. What's the best way please. My first thought was a usb plug to usb plug but I found out that was slow and also unreliable.

One pc running win xp crashed. If I insert a knoppix cd live disc I can view my win files.
I have another pc also with win xp, okay at the moment. How can I transfer the files from the duff windows pc to the good one.

read some of the knoppx hacks about setting up a samba server and you can copy the files from the dead XP to the good one, or if the dead one has a CDRW/DVDR you can just use knoppix to burn your data out to a CD/DVD.

There are several ways like that to get the data off of the dead XP system. getting the USB stick to auto mount even in knoppix is iffy. IIRC the SuSe 9.3 Pro live CD has that compiled into the GUI, but i could be wrong. the last knoppix i used (3.5-7 somewere around there) did not have automount loaded for USB devices.

Under the penguin on the task bar is a menu tree. Use Start Samba Server to start it. Then there is one for Samba Network Neighborhood. Click it and you should see the other computer. Then if you open your File Manager you should be able to drag and drop from one file manager to the other and move your files. You may have to enable Captive NTFS not sure.

Samba seems to be the answer and now I know where to find it on the screen.

The alternative is to fix your XP box , how is that broken?

Can you also update your profile with your location, it makes things a bit easier to know which time zone you are in, also friendlier

Win xp started giving error messages about missing dll files. Tried system rescue discs four times but each time all I end up with is a blank screen with a flashing cursor - this is at the very end where is says restart system, the screen goes blank.

Small help with Samba please
Taskbar, menu tree, start samba server...I then get configure & start samba, click yes...but nothing appears to happen.

one more easy solution ( obviously if you have permission and dare to do it )
plug out the hard drive from the corrupted pc.
Connect it to the working pc as slave one.
Back up the data.........thats it.

Brilliant idea, why did,nt I think of that. Just need to get hold of the adapter cable for connecting two hd.
If samba does not work for me will give hd idea a go.

i would be careful of doing that in a windows to windows enviroment. if his broaken system has viruses it WILL CORRUPT the clean system as soon as he boots.

safer to run knoppix, run f-secure, then setup samba and move the CLEAN files over.

The second box is a laptop then? If not you shouldn't need an adapter cable, just plug it into one of the (free) ide plugs.

No luck so far with samba. May have to do the hd connection.
