Why does upgrade of x11 and alsa on slack mess stuff up?

When I upgrade x11 and alsa through swaret sound and x server doesn't work. I am upgrading to latest version from an slackware 10 install. Any ideas?

Have you rerun 'alsaconf' after you're finished?

I have to do that after I upgrade anything with Alsa.

Likewise. What's more, it seems to have lost alsactlstore so I have to run alsa every time I reboot too.. I'll fix in when I have time.

As for X... have you, maybe, just switched from Xfree to Xorg with this upgrade..?

upgrade manually..............swaret has a bad habit of fubar'ing a system which
is WHY Pat V. took it out of Slack 10 in the first place...........

ok, i will try; I have a few questions though.
Can I still use .tgz packages (or compile from source only) to upgrade?
Would many people need x11-devel package?
Is slapt-get any better than swaret?
What happened to swaret.org?
Are there any other programs like slapt-get and swaret for slackware?

Thanks

it's not upgrading slackware that messes stuff up, it's swaret, don't use swaret

And slapt-get isn't supposed to be that much better either.

Just rsync a mirror and upgrade manually, read UPGRADE.txt, it's not that hard to do.

swaret moved here:
http://swaret.sourceforge.net/index.php

slackgrade is another slack update app - I haven't tried it, so I can't say whether I'd recommend it or not, but have a look:

http://slackgrade.sourceforge.net/
