video problems with freespire

I have a problem with running Freespire on my computer either as a live cd
or from an install...After freespire starts up and runs for around 5 minutes
the system locks up completely no input from mouse or k/board and I have to
hit the switch to reboot..I can run Ubuntu and Mepis on this machine with
with no problems however Freespire,Elive and Saboyan all freeze after a few minutes
The m/board is a Gigabyte ga7-va and the grapics card is nvidia fx5700 le
I remember having a similar problem some years ago and cured it by changing the
vid card but this card has seen little use and am loath to lash out money on a new card...I did notice that in Elive if I booted from the plain vesa instead of a nvidia driver it seemed ok yet an lsmod in Mepis/Ubuntu tells me I am using a
nvidia driver..
Any help/ideas appreciated...
