Red face usb keyboard and mouse

hi hi

I have installed gentoo on a second system, one that has both usb keyboard and mouse. I have tried getting usb to work on both machines but because I can't, I've come to the conclusion I'm just plain dumb.

I have checked various threads on the issue and nothing seems to work for me. I'm sure that I have the kernel config right. I've checked out http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x194.html as well but I'm not having much luck at all.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be reallu greatful. Just annoying because the gentoo live cd works fine. Detects kb and mouse.

Thanks

Sorry, I haven't even got xfree installed yet

I'm running Gentoo-Sources kernel 2.4.20 r8. I have HID support compiled in. I have keyboard and mouse in the input devices. I know USB works because I have windblows on the other partition. I haven't done a dmesg because I can't login. They keyboard is non-responsive. So looks like I'm gonna have to test with another keyboard, huh?

Thanks

I'm just on the live CD for gentoo as a test and when I do dmesg | grep "usb" I can see that it detects both my keyboard and mouse. Input 0 for kb and input 1 for mouse. Even cooler is that I can access my digi cam through the live disc as I added support for SCSI and usb-storage device.

This is bum. I need it to work for me

Okay, using another keyboard, I echoed dmesg to a text file and this is the result:

Code:
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 3
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 4
usb.c: registered new driver usblp
usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=2 (error=-110)
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (error=-110)
usb.c: registered new driver hid
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=4 (error=-110)
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=5 (error=-110)
Any ideas would be hugely appreciated
