I'm pretty sure the os detected the drive (otherwise you would not see /dev/sdb1), I guess what you want is to have it automatically mounted at boot. This can be achieved by adding a line to your /etc/fstab

/dev/sdb1 /data ntfs defaults 0 0
Here I've assumed that you want it mounted at "/data", and that you have already made the mount point. Eg
Please note that you may be happier reformating the disk to use a native linux file system (but I don't know what you intend to use this for).
