unknown filesystem, grub rescue

I registered here because i am going to start learning linux and i am going to install it on a separate system.

However, i have a problem right now. I am the go-to guy in my group for pc probs. I am re-installing win 7 ult on a machine for a friend. Its about 3 months old, gigabyte mobo, P4 quadcore. I got that "cd missing" error. When i get any error messages while trying to install windows i usually just install ubuntoo linux first and then install the win 7 and all goes fine. I have found this trick to work fine on a number of occasions. This is not a dualboot situation. It somehow fixes the drive up and then the win 7 install goes fine.
This time, though, things didnt go fine. Now i get an error message saying:
unknown filesystem, grub rescue
Since i know nothing about linux i cant get past this. I have taken the drive and made it a new volume and formatted in NTFS but i still get the same linux message on this drive so i cant install win 7. Can you help me out please, keeping in mind that i know nothing about linux. One thing, since i know nothing its fair to say that installing ubuntoo linux is a snap since even i can do it!
thanks in advance.

Hi, Welcome to LQ!

LQ has a fantastic search function that may save you time waiting for an answer to a popular question.

With over 4 million posts to search it's possible the answer has been given.
I think ubuntu is using grub2 now and not the old one, the grub2 is a complete re-write and does things differently.

grub2 installs some file/s to the mbr of the drive, and that is where the error message is coming from.

Although I have very little experience with win7 (had the beta installed for a year) I generally (when required)

install windows is a similar manner.

One way to rewrite the mbr is with dd and there are other ways to do it with formatting/partitioning tools.

Code:
another way to rewrite the mbr from gnu/linux is dd.
of the 512 bites of the MBR, the partition table resides after 446 bites, so this will leave the partition table alone and write the rest.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda/ bs=446 count=1
ref. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/using-linuxs-fdisk-to-erase-or-fix-a-mbr-300256/#post1526191

to rewrite the entire mbr, use 512 instead
ref. http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-how-to-uninstall-grub/
(please note, If you have only one partition there is no partition table to damage or wipe!)

This will remove grub2 from the mbr, then you should be right to go on from there with the windows7 install.

The cd missing error maybe caused from the windows disk not knowing about your new (3 months) gigabyte motherboard chipset

used for the sata controllers. once the OS takes over from the bios

I generally slipstream the driver into winxp(?) with nlite

I hope this helps,

regards Glenn

Thanks very much for responding. Sorry to take so long to reply.
Might as well come out with it. I somehow disconnected the dvd burner so thats why i got that error message.
After that i got the infamous (cd\dvd drivers not found). So i put win 7 on a thumb drive and installed it that way so i am all set.

As for the chipset i tried loading the drivers but win 7 install wouldnt let me so i used the thumb driver method.

What is dd? Where do i find it? As i said, I am going to start learning linux as time permits.

thanks

dd is a terminal cmd , to see the instructions for it open a terminal and type " man dd " without the quotes . man <cmd> brings up the manual
page(s) for any cmd
