Unable to correctly scale desktop to TV screen
I've been given a NUC with an HDMI output. As I don't have a suitable monitor I'd like to initially use it with my TV. I've installed Mint 17.2 with Cinnamon desktop. While reading the TV handbook regarding using it as a monitor I saw the sentence "The edges of the image may be hidden" without realising it's significance.
At maximum resolution the bottom bar is completely off the screen and I can only haphazardly access the icons by floating the mouse pointer below the screen surround in the approximate area and hoping for the best. If I reduce the resolution I can just about see the tops of some icons but its obviously an unsatisfactory situation. As I see it there isn't any way I can get around this problem by adjusting any settings.
It occurred to me that if there is a desktop which either:
A. Doesn't use the top, bottom or sides for operating icons or
B. Has a much wider/deeper bar on which the icons are situated then I could possibly manage with that.
I'm conversant with Mint and to a lesser degree with Ubuntu so any suggestions for a suitable desktop for either of those would be welcome.
