I'm not seeing any errors in your xorg.o.log. ACPI is known to be troublesome. You could try disabling it by adding the entry to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. If you post the contents of this file i will edit it to show where you should put the entry. Otherwise you would always have to remember to add it everytime you boot.

I have a guess as to what might be causing the inconsistency. Udev assigns names to physical devices on your system when the kernel boots. The kernel searches for hardware in parallel so the name that Udev assigns to a particular device is not necessarily always the same.

What you do in Udev, is create naming rules for particular hardware: Network cards, hard drivers, etc, so that those devices are always named the same thing.

It is possible that you got unlucky with the particular hardware (possibly the hard disk) that you have in that the default Ubuntu Udev rules don't work for your hardware. The solution would be to define the correct Udev rules for your hardware.

This might be wrong, but it does explain the inconsistency.---rm_dash_rf_star.

So how and what do I need to try renaming.

I have nothing important on this hard disk so if I loose it all thats OK!!

My udev idea was incorrect.

Try this: following is my /etc/fstab file:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /download ext2 suid,dev,exec 0 0
/dev/sda5 /home ext3 suid,dev,exec 0 0
/dev/sda6 /usr ext3 suid,dev,exec 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrom auto pamconsole,fscontext=system_ubject_r:removable_t,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

The root of my filesystem is an ide hard disk, but instead of specifying that I have:

LABEL=/
Try changing this in your /etc/fstab file.

So you should have something like this:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1

Make sure that you put in your filesystem if you don't use ext3.

What was the exact message, and the previous 4-5 lines that the kernel gives you before it says: kernel panic?

I am assuming that the computer boots, gives you some output, and then says ... kernel panic ...

Nope it never boots and I never get a kernel panic message. I just assumed that it must have panic when it didn't boot. When it hangs, it hangs in the boot sequence somewhere.

I noticed on you menu.1st that you had no argument for the hard drive. look at mine mine is on hdc or sdc drive what ever you want to call it. this tells it what hard drive to look for. sda1 is (hd0,0) sda2 is (hd0.1)
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-22-generic
root (hd2,0) <--------theses are not on yours with out that it will not boot..
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-22-generic root=UUID=6d6554fb-b8ec-4b77-af61-e4d3ef6298f0 ro quiet splash loglevel=0
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-generic
quiet
