Tweek or remap a joystick setup for racer!

I have a SideWinder FF Pro.

Looking for some ideas..

I'm trying to configure racer to work properly with the gas and brake.

The foot controls are on axis y. The gas pedal is y01 and the brake is y04.

The problem is that when the gas is released it applies the brakes. It's impossible to drive a couple of hundred miles per hour and negotiate curves this way.

I can set the brake to some other control and then it's possible to release the gas and coast. However I need the brake pedal to work as well.

I'm looking for some way to tell racer to use y01 and y04, or a way to map y01 and y04 to other axis so they can be specified as so. (example)

the way it is (which works only with the gas pedal -- y01)..

gas = y
brake = y

what it needs to be (possibly if remapping can be done)

gas = w
brake = z

or

gas = y
brake = z

something like that.

This game has a lot of potential for online racing. As long as you have a machine to run it. It's a hog, but it's mostly due to the extensive 3D graphics detail. It runs perfectly on my radeon 9600 xt but this issue needs to be resolved or it's basically just unusable.
