trying to format HD as Ext3 fails

Hello!

I have an old test box with a P2 Processor, not much Ram and a 6gig HD.

I know.,this isn't really a good box to use for testing, but I'm not even at that point!

I went in and wiped the drive (win 98 Fat32) and now I'm trying to use my system suite cd to re-create the drive as ext3 and install xubuntu.

The problem is that I cant format it as ext3. It will only allow me to format as Fat32. Is there somthing that I need to change in the bios in order to allow other FS's?

thanks!

It just say's 'VCOM rescue disk'. I managed to get it formatted as ext2. The install just hangs anyway. Need to part another old box and add some ram to it.

Thanks!

you could pull that drive out, throw it in another working computer and clean it up from there, either from windows or linux..

you know, it could be that the drive is just going bad. sounds pretty old, a 6 gig'r..

Yeah, old! lol! I just added a 128mb stick to it. all is ok so far.

Actually now I stuck the ubuntu Live cd into it. everything seems to be loading ok so far. (though slow) Once I get to the desktop, I'll install it to the drive. should speed up a little after that.

Thanks!
