Try a "build your own" distro

I wanted to try to build my own Linux system like maybe Gentoo or LFS. I was looking at LFS, and there are a few things I don't understand, especially the compiler flags. Gentoo also seems pretty neat, but emerge broke down trying to install the kernel when I tried it. Good, clear instructions would help, too.

I was wondering if you would have any tips for me?

Yes. Don't bother. I did LFS a few years ago and really there was nothing to be gained by doing it.

If you're insistent on doing it, try "man gcc" if you want to see what individual compiler flags do.

I don't understand what you mean by You want to build your own system "like" so and so.... if you want to make your own distro, well, let's just say there's a lot of work to be done .
Or do you just want to see your entire distros worth of programs *compiled* under your eyes (AFAIK, this is what Gentoo does)?
If so, then just *use* it.
