Trouble installing Qt.

I can't seem to get Qt 3.0.X installed on debian and the problem looks complex but easy to fix. When I try to run ./configure it compiles the program that its supposed to use to install, qmake, but before it can finish I get this error about five times: "undefined reference to atexit." I think it has something to do with gcc, its version 2.95. I tried to update it with a debian binary and it wouldn't overwrite the old version even when I tried to force it If someone says its the version I will go ahead and get the tar.gz format. Please help.
