tripple boot??

I'm currently dual booting Red Hat 9 and Win XP in a 40 gigs HD. I'm using Grub as my boot laoder.
I just 2nd HD because i want to install mandrake as well, i just have a couple of questions:

Do I still have to install LILO?? or can Grub do it for me.
If so, do i have to install it in the MBR??

any suggestions and help on how to tripple boot would be greatly welcome and appreciated.... thnx in advance....

I've never done it before, so my advice isn't from experience, but I'd imagine GRUB could do it for you. If you just install Mandrake and then point your grub.conf file to the new Mandrake entry at the correct /dev/hdbx it may work.

Thnx for the reply, correct me if i'm wrong, you are saying that i can install mandrake and choose not to install a boot loader. Then i'll reconfigure my old boot loader (grub)?

Yes I installed Win98SE first, then Redhat second with Grub, then later on Mandrake without a bootloader then I modified my Grub.conf file to point to my mandrake partition and when it boots I have a choice of three OSes. Maybe this thread will help you to get it going, it solved my problem.

first locate the file grub.conf it should be undert /etc/grub.conf just do a find for it. once you know where it is open an editor (I use Kate) and add the lines for mandrake use the redhat section as a guide. Also you will need to be root to do this just before you do anything make a set of boot floppies for each OS and back everything up.

heh, I guess I'm trying to set up the same system that jt1020's got, but want to run WIN98SE, WINXP PRO, RED HAT 9, and MANDRAKE 9.1.

Right now I've got a 40 gig drive partioned quite a bit...C: is my bootloader partition, WinXP Pro is on the D:, I've got an E: for Win98 SE (not loaded yet), then F: and G: are for Linux, I think, and H: is the Linux swap...if I haven't mucked anything up since I last partitioned it.

When I boot up, Red Hat 9's Grub loader offers me the option to boot RHL 9 or DOS. If I choose DOS, I get the WINXP bootloader which loads WINXP just fine. If I choose Red Hat on Grub, it'll start to load, then have a "kernel panic" error because it can't find an init file or something.

If you can't tell, I'm a newbie Linux/multi-boot user.

Any suggestions how I can make my computer run all four OS's on one hard drive? At some point I may have one hard drive for all of the Linux OS's and one hard drive with all of the Windows OS's...how would I go about setting that up so I had a boot loader (PREFERRABLY a Linux boot loader, since they look better) let me choose between any of the four operating systems on one screen?

heh...help?

Thanks for the document...have a question, though.

If I have Windows XP on C: and have Linux on D: (partitions on the same physical HDD), will the Grub or Lilo boot loader appear and give me the Linux/DOS option, or do I need to have the Linux Boot Loader also on C: ?

I've read somewhere that it may require modifiying the Windows Boot file to point at the Linux boot loader.

Thanks for your help!

You just have to install Grub in the MBR (Master Boot Record) and you should be able to dual boot Linux and Windows....

Talking

Okay, it's been months 'n months since I last posted on this thread...

Just wanted to let you all know that I've finally managed to triple boot Win98SE, WinXP Pro, and RHL 9 using RHL's GRUB boot loader. Decided to not worry about Mandrake until I'm a little more linux-literate.

Thanks for the help, guys.

If you don't mind me asking why are you waiting till you're more linux litterate till you use Mandrake?

Mandrake is even more newbie freindly than RedHat!

You should progress from RedHat to something like Gentoo, Slack, Suse or Debian.

Well, I'm just trying to cut down on my frustration level. Took me this long to get 2 Windows and 1 Linux to play nice...might as well know what I'm doing with Linux before I get too ahead of myself. Really isn't worth me having more than one linux when I don't really know what I can do with it anyway.

On that note, anybody happen to know of any fun/interesting things I could do with RHL 9? I've got a big thick book written on it ("Red Hat Linux 9 Bible" by Christopher Negus), but I think I'd much rather see what you think of it.

The intent behind me getting Linux is so that I won't be quite as narrow-minded about computing and operating systems...I have a desire to expand my knowledge and get a better understanding of what's out there.

Thanks,

Torquehead
