teminal : type yes !!!

hey guys whassup ..

i was trying to install some apt-get today ..but my terminal stoped in a shock that another sys software is running ..i looked down and remembered that i was using synaptic..
but the thing is..terminal asked a question "is another process using it?" ...so i tried to be smart over him and typed "yes"
guess what ..the shell started to type "y" all over the page and never stopped ...i had to close the shell ...

i tried it again and it continued to appear
is there something iam missing....have i done something wrong could harm the system...

your opinions?

Haha, no nothing is wrong. 'yes' is a unix command, just like 'cd' or 'ls'. The purpose of 'yes' is to use interactive programs in non-interactive scripts. Using a pipe, the 'yes' command answers 'y' to any question asked. However, if you just type it, it will go on forever.

---

I should add that it freaked me out when I first discovered it too.

You can press ctrl+c to interrupt many programs. This would have stopped 'yes' without you having to close the terminal.
