I am a relative Linux newb but this may (?) relate more to my setup than my lack of knowledge. I have a Suse 10.1 PC and a Windows PC on a Logitech KVM switch with a Logitech mouse and an old HP keyboard. Usually in the morning (after being away from my Linux session for hours) I KVM over to do something and find that, although my desktop is as I left it, all the windows now lack title bars (they just have the drop down menu row) and the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop is visible but will not react to mouse clicks. Interestingly other things (like window drop down menus or files in File Manager) *do* react to mouse clicks. I cannot type into editing windows even if I make sure I click to focus on them. I use KDE with a Keramik theme. If I log out and then back in everything is fine, I can type and click and the windows have their normal title bars. I have tried looking on Google but have not seen anything similar to this situation.

I have begun to wonder if it is due to the full system backup which I take overnight (YaST). I realize I could try turning off the backup and seeing if the problem disappears, I just thought I'd check to be sure this wasn't a well known (to others) situation before I started playing Sherlock Holmes.

i was suffuring from similar problems when i had my pc running on 128 mb of rams ,but i was using gnome not kde thats what made nautilus do strang behaviors ,that i had to kill nautilus and rexecute it ..

how much ram u got ?
how much free space u have on hd ?

Good questions raven4d. I try to include a lot of detail, but I forgot to touch on hardware. It's an Intel P4, when I look at "My Computer" it says 504MB Total Memory and 185MB caches, but the free memory is fluctuating around 7MB, so you may have a point. It says KDE is at 3.5.1 Level A.

Someone I was talking to at a Christmas party suggested maybe the machine is trying to hibernate and only getting part-way there. That's another thing I can look into (I now have three: your memory/disk idea, my overnight backup idea and my friend's hibernate idea).
