Question system freeze for few seconds when saving data on hardisk

Hi

I have following problem with my linux system (Ubuntu 9)

I installed VMware Player and using virtual machines.
Every time I start the machine it allocates virtual memory, so on OS level it creates a file (for 2GB RAM file has the same file).
While the file is created my system hangs for a while. It is very annoying and when I use the same on Windows XP ( I have dual boot config) there is no such problem.
Its quite often when I heavily use disk (write process for big files, for instance while copying big files).

Is there anything I can check/change so this will not happen ?

regards
Rafal

you can (needs a long reading stuff) try and use hdparm and tweak the harddisk parameters to make it fast.
Also, the writing may be taking too much of CPU time. Why not 'nice' up the process and decrease the priority
and check if the machine responds ?
