Just to document this a little further (and to see that one of the wonders of Linux is that most times you have plenty of ways to get things done
), if you don't have grub installed (or you don't have the option to boot into recovery mode), you can always boot with a LiveCD, mount the disk partition where / is and then
Locate the line where the information for root is specified:

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Delete the 'x' (the second field in the line above) leaving it as
Code:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Then eject the LiveCD and boot from the hard disk. You will be able to login as root without a password.
Since this is extremely insecure, make sure you set the root password after booting with
