Just to document this a little further (and to see that one of the wonders of Linux is that most times you have plenty of ways to get things done ), if you don't have grub installed (or you don't have the option to boot into recovery mode), you can always boot with a LiveCD, mount the disk partition where / is and then
Code:
nano /etc/passwd
Locate the line where the information for root is specified:
Code:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Delete the 'x' (the second field in the line above) leaving it as
Code:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Then eject the LiveCD and boot from the hard disk. You will be able to login as root without a password.
Since this is extremely insecure, make sure you set the root password after booting with
Code:
passwd
Feel free to drop us a line should you have any further questions.

And another way

As you can read here: Forgotten root password there is another way as long as you have GRUB installed in your system (probably the other boot managers will have it too). You boot in single user mode and change root password.

It always worked for me in the past and you don't need Live CD.
