Sound under Gnome isn't working (/dev/dsp err)

I installed Slackware 7.1 with the GNOME desktop. Whenever it tries to play sound, it gets an error saying that it can't open /dev/dsp . Any suggestions
Just ask if any other specs are needed.

u could try n see if /dev/dsp exists with "ls "/dev/dsp" or "file /dev/dsp". If it exists make sure the permissions are correct, for me it is owner root and gruop sys, both read/write and write for all.
If /dev/dsp doesnt exist do "mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3" to make the character device (and check ownership/permissions).
If that doesnt work its either sound modules not loaded, or not configured well.

HTH, somehow.
