well, they can just cd to the directory and access the software from there, provided that you chmodded it appropriately (probably 770 unless you want to give them less).
below: this is a redhat 7.1 configuration; other distros may be slightly different.
you probably should just add:
PATH=$PATH:/parent/mydir
to the .bashrc file.
that's the correct syntax, but i'm not sure if this retains the other path variables. i'm pretty sure it does. make sure to check by typing
echo $PATH
before and after the changes are made (and you've reloaded your shell with the new changes afterwards)
